Helping Houston

As you are probably already aware, Houston and the surrounding areas have been devastated by flooding.  Lives have been changed forever.  Some of you, like Don and I, have family and friends who have definitely been affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Here is one way you can help:  Get trained to serve with SBC's Disaster Relief team!

Below is a list of dates for which you can register to receive training.  I am planning on attending the September 9th training at Central Baptist Church in Jonesboro.  You will have to register yourself for whichever training you would like to attend.

  • EMERGENCY FEEDING TRAINING - Arkansas Baptist State Convention Building (This is the greatest need right now.  They estimate they will need around 700 volunteers a week.)
    • August 30th
    • September 6th
    • September 13th
8 am - 2 pm (lunch is included)
The following trainings will be offered:
    • Chainsaw
    • Communications
    • CPR (not certified)
    • Feeding
    • Flood Recovery (formerly Mud-Out)
    • How to Tell Your Story (Deployment Evangelism)
    • Shower/Laundry

The cost of the training is $30 for new volunteers and $20 for volunteers who need to renew their Disaster Relief ID.

Blessings,
Mike Shipp

New Global Missions Ministry…Bucket Ministry

This year Wynne Baptist is starting a new global missions ministry - WBC Bucket Ministry!  You may have read about it in the latest Challenge.  It is associated with Baptist Global Response (BGR), a disaster relief and community development organization committed to helping Southern Baptists around the world with a heart for helping people in desperate need.

BGR and its partners respond to people with critical needs, whether those needs arise from chronic conditions—like extreme poverty, contaminated water, or endemic hunger—or acute crises—such as natural disaster, personal trauma, or social upheaval

WBC Projects
This year, WBC would like to emphasize one of their 20 projects—The Hospice Bucket Project. Many IMB missionaries on the continent of Africa use the buckets.

Our very own Langston family, currently serving as IMB missionaries in Zambia use the buckets to visit terminally ill Zambians and present the gospel. The BGR Hospice Kit is a compilation of medical and hygiene supplies to help those with terminal illnesses.

This is where you and your family can step in to help! Each month, WBC will collect specific items for the buckets. By next December, our church should have the needed supplies to make several buckets.

BGR and the Langstons
In addition to the Langstons, Pamela Fisher, Dena and Rusty McClain, and Keith and Cindy Watson were able to help while on short-term mission trips. According to one of the team members, the Spirit of God is so evident in this ministry as they visited the poor, terminally ill patients.

They carried much more than supplies in a bucket. They carried the good news to people who were often living in a sense of shame because they have HIV and most were without Jesus. This bucket showed the villagers that Jesus cares enough about them to send items to bring them comfort. After the gospel presentation, we opened the bucket and shared how each item was to be used.

Also, they explained to them that churches in the U.S. packed these buckets and prayed for the person receiving it. This news always brought a smile to each face and a thank you from the patient.

Cindy and Keith Watson will be the liaisons for this project, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask them. The BGR team members are: Dena and Rusty McClain and Pamela Fisher.

We plan to have several collection sites located around our church campus for your donations. Each month, you will be reminded of the item being collected. On months when several items are listed, you can choose which one to bring OR you can bring both…your choice.

Thank you for being a part of this effort to reach the nations for Christ.
